Flies on frogs and flowers – mouthparts of specialized Diptera

Unit for Integrative Zoology, Department of Evolutionary Biology
University of Vienna

Summary

All adult Diptera possess fluid feeding mouthparts. I present recent work on the functional morphology of the proboscises of species that are specialized to extract fluids from frogs or concealed nectar of flowers. The evolutionary morphology of dipteran mouthparts is discussed in functional and ecological context.
